Something Different

Since I’m in NJ, I missed the annual Gasparilla Pirate Festival that’s going on in Tampa, Florida right now.  My sister and her husband went yesterday, and watched the  Jose Gasparilla sail into Tampa Bay.  Pirates descend on the city, ‘buying’ the citizens with their ‘swag’ – in this case, zillions and zillions (really) of really gaudy beads.  It’s the third biggest parade in the country, with lots of cannon fire and smoke and good fun.  And in spite of the huge crowds and free-flowing beer, the crowds are orderly and everyone is just having a good time.  You can see some of the photos Here.

This was the first time my sister attended, and although she said she “didn’t quite understand it” she had a great time.  The Festival sort of honors a real pirate, Jose Gaspar, a respected Spanish naval officer who turned Pirate and plundered ships all along the west coast of Florida.  How much of the story is actually true is uncertain, but it makes for a good festival today.

Maybe next year…

What a party! I especially liked the photo of the blonde gal and the guy loaded down with enormous beads. The boats were captivating, too. Again, what a party!

Looks like an awful lot of fun!

Our eldest lives in Tarpon Springs, used to live in Tampa, so I have heard of the Gasparilla Festival. Sounds like fun, but wayyyyy too many people for me.
