Aptly Named

We have 200 school kids in today and tomorrow, besides the regular banding, so I don’t have a lot of time to post or read other blogs until the weekend.  But here’s the bird of the day:  Rose breasted Grosbeak.   Aptly named – he bit me – hard!  Nursing bruised fingers.

Notice the lovely pink underwing coverts (wing lining feathers).  On the drab-brown females, they are yellow.

Youch – he’s beautfiul though – so your bite was worth it!

Wow–I didn’t realize the rose theme carried through to wing lining feathers. That’s one fancy bird there.
The beak looks like it should be respected.

It’s like a cape with a red satin lining! Beautiful.
